Project 1 Self-Advocacy
Project 1 Self Advocacy Goals
Summary of Student:
Emmanuel is a 6th grade student who relies on his cochlear implant in order to hear. He has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He does not hear from his left ear and his right ear has his CI. Emmanuel is meeting grade level expectations in most of his classes. He is able to understand grade concepts and respond appropriately, but does not use correct grammar, spelling, or syntax. He quantifies as an English Language Learner as Spanish is the primary language spoken at home and has effected his English acquisition.
Without his CI he cannot detect speech sounds. Emmanuel needs speakers to be within 10 feet of his assistive device, he needs minimal background noise, and for his right ear to be facing the presenter. His hearing loss is primarily effecting high frequency sounds such as s, th, and f. These high frequency sounds are also more common in spoken language and have dramatically impacted his speech and language production. Having an FM helps Emmanuel to hear the speaker or presenter in a room with more than 10 people or with excessive reverberation. In a quiet room Emmanuel can hear the teacher from up to 20 feet away with 85% accuracy if the teacher has a deeper or lower frequency voice, that accuracy goes down to 60% with a teacher that has a high frequency voice. If there is no seating chart then he will sit closer to the teacher when in those situations.
Observational Notes:
What did you understand of the lesson?
The pace of the lesson was too fast. He had to look over his notes and was unsure about how to do the procedures taught during the lesson.
What is the homework for today?
Homework was on the presentation and handed out as a practice sheet. He had homework presented to him visually three ways and orally.
Participate?
He did not participate in the lesson I observed.
Strategies for Self-Advocacy?
He did not ask for help, clarification, or notify a teacher in anyway that he needed help. He looked to the peers seated in front of him for help. He did at the end of class clarify that the homework was due tomorrow.
Comprehension Check?
Emmanuel could tell me parts of the lesson. The lesson was on Decimals, Fractions, and Percents. He understood Fractions and Percents, but still was unclear about decimals and how to transition between the three. He struggled to hear students' comments and answers to the teachers' questions. He chose his seat in the back, because he wanted to see who was talking and felt like he could better hear students' comments. However, many of the comments were very quiet and the teacher did not repeat what was said.
GOALS:
- Self-Advocacy
Goal: In the general education classroom Emmanuel will signal the teacher by either raising his hand or giving them a signal that notifies he could not hear what was said by the teacher or another student.
Baseline: Emmanuel currently asks for repetition or clarification 0 out of 10 opportunities other students talk in class without an FM.
Objective: Emmanuel will ask for clarification or repetition 6 out of 10 opportunities.
Benchmark: Emmanuel will give the teacher a secret signal to let them know they didn’t hear other students comments 4 out of 10 opportunities.
- Self-Advocacy
Goal: In a classroom with greater than 20 students Emmanuel will sit within 10 feet of the teacher or speaker or use assistive technology when seated further away.
Baseline: Emmanual sits within 10 feet of the speaker 5 out of 10 opportunities.
Objective: Emmanuel will sit within 10 feet of the speaker 8 out of 10 opportunities.
Benchmark: Emmanuel will use assistive technology 8 out of 10 opportunities.

Hi Vanessa,
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you responded to my comments in your Student Observation document, but you forgot to answer the first question. Please go back and do that.
I also left comments/questions on your Video Observation form. Please take a look at those and respond where necessary.
When responding to the comments, don't hit resolve. Just respond.
Below is a document that I'll need you to look at as well. There are a few things I need you to do. They are underlined. Please respond right inside the document in an alternating color so we can differentiate between you and I.
Please email me when these things are complete. Nice job.
