Vanessa Blaauw's Teaching Journal: Schedule

Daily Schedule:

Hour 1: WIN ASL 7th & 8th
"What I Need" class or WIN class. Teaching ASL and deaf culture not for credit. Bringing in people from the community to teach the students and talk with them as well.

Hour 2: Study Hall/ DHH Support 6th
Each day of the week we focus on a different hour of the day. This can be used as a study hall, but primarily it is to ensure each DHH 6th grader has the vocabulary and tools they need to succeed in the regular education classroom. This is where my primary instruction takes place. I am making sure students can pronounce key terms and define them. We are reviewing for tests or using this as extra test time. We also spend about 5 to 10 min covering self-advocacy or social topics as needed.
The week is organized chronologically the same as their class schedule, which happened to match well with their testing schedule most of those classes.
Monday: Social Studies and Expanded English
Tuesday: English/Reading
Wednesday: Math, vocabulary, functions, critical thinking, and how to solve word problems.
Thursday: Science and Expanded Reading
Friday: Reading/English


Hour 2.5: Homeroom/Advisory. ACT prep 6th graders. Expanding learning through test preparation, math practice, reading, and language exposure.

Hour 3: English/DHH Support 6th
Push in/Pull out support. Primarily in the classroom, but pulling out for individual work time.

Hour 4: Math/DHH Support 6th
Push in/Pull out support. Depending on the students IEP, I pull students for testing or simplified slower version of classroom instruction.

Hour 5: Prep or supporting other teachers. Sometimes supporting students who are struggling in other classes.

Hour 6: Math DHH support 8th
Push in/Pull out support. Primarily in classroom support. Pulling primarily for tests to be read aloud..

Hour 7: Reading DHH support 6th
Push in/Pull out support. We often pull out for readings, explanations of key terms, or testing. (Depending on their IEP)

6th grade case load: 2 students who are mostly independent, 4 who rely on classroom support inside and out side the classroom, and 2 students who rely heavily on extra support inside and outside the classroom. For most of them this is their first time being mainstreamed.

  1. Vanessa, sounds like you do a lot of support of the general education setting. How do you collaborate that with the classroom teacher? Are you able to get vocabulary and other content ahead of time so you can prepare lessons? I had a role similar to yours many years ago. I enjoyed it but it also had its challenges! Looking forward to working with you this semester and watching you apply your skills!

    1. I have been pulling out more, due to students needs. We may begin a class in the regular education room and during work time go to the DHH room.
      It depends on the teacher. Some classes I co-teach in the class by adding clarifications, asking questions, and even teaching parts of lessons. Others I work like a paraprofessional would in the room.
      I e-mail teachers weekly for lesson plans and vocabulary. I also check in before each class on the lesson plan for that day, if I did not already receive it ahead of time. This all depends on the preparedness of the teacher. However, I usually have the unit goals and I pick out key vocabulary and pre-teach difficult words so that they can be successful and participate in class. I do enjoy it! There is always something to do. It is difficult having such a large group of students and students with very diverse needs.

      Each hour is approximately 48 minutes. My favorite hours are English and Reading, because I love the content and vocabulary. I also enjoy lunch when I allow for students to have lunch in my classroom or when they are finished with lunch in the lunch room they can come to my class to have social time or finish projects.
      This week I will be doing a cameo in Science class to teach about Energy and how our ear uses 4 types of energy! I am looking forward to this. I love science. Now that we finally have a smart board it is much easier to show them what it is I am trying to describe.
